Using proxy servers with ExpressOIDC

I’m following the instructions laid out here to use a proxy server with @okta/oidc-middleware ExpressOIDC.

However, I’m getting the following error:
TypeError: Issuer.useRequest is not a function

Wondering if there is another recommended approach for using a proxy for Okta authentication.
