Changes Are Coming to the Okta Developer Edition Organizations

As part of Okta’s Secure Identity Commitment (OSIC) to lead the industry in the fight against identity attacks, we are making changes to improve our architecture related to developer organizations.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://developer.okta.com/blog/2025/05/13/okta-developer-edition-changes

Hello!

We are a software development company, writing a web application for customer who uses Okta SSO to authenticate users to our app using OIDC. We’ve been using Okta Developer Edition on our end to test the integration, which has worked quite well for us.

As the developer edition is being discontinued, I have started migrating to the Integrator Free Plan, but am stuck/confused. After signing up, I’m trying to set up my account for the first time. During the signup process, I am told that I need to have Okta Verify on this device in order to proceed. Previously in my developer organization I used Okta Verify on my Android phone, but apparently this approach is not supported in the Integrator Free Plan? Ok, the account setup process helpfully includes a link to Okta Verify, so I decided to set up OV on my Windows machine, but… the link only tells me on what platforms Okta Verify is supported, but doesnt’t have the download. Elsewhere on Okta website I found information that “Okta Verify for Windows is only available on Okta Identity Engine.”

Our company does not have Okta Identity Engine.

How can I successfully set up my account on the Integrator Free Plan to continue supporting our software development process?

Thanks in advance,
Toomas

As it turns out, it is perfectly possible to log in to the Integrator Free Plan account without having Okta Verify on the same system where you run the browser. I actually tried it yesterday - used Okta Verify app on my Android phone while logging in to my Okta admin console on my computer - and the account setup process on Okta Verify kept throwing me back to the start of the account setup process, but today the account setup was completed successfully. It may very well have been because the Okta Verify app on my phone was not the latest version.

Perhaps the text on the account setup page that says that Okta Verify must run “on this device” should be amended to reduce the chance of someone else getting confused like me.

Thank you for the feedback! I’m going through the signup flow looking the exact “on this device” wording in order to escalate the issue, but I’m not seeing it. After I click the emailed link and set a password, it tells me that the next step is Okta Verify with the text “Okta Verify is an authenticator app, installed on your phone or computer, used to prove your identity
Used for access”.

On the following Okta Verify setup screen, I see the text “Set up Okta Verify
Click “Open Okta Verify” on the browser prompt to set up Okta Verify.
Didn’t get a prompt?
Set up Okta Verify
Don’t have Okta Verify? Download here
Or set up Okta Verify on a mobile device

This presents me with the 3 options – use the system’s Okta Verify, setup Okta Verify, or use the mobile app. When I click the mobile device link, I’m presented with instructions on how to install Okta Verify from the app store if needed, as well as the QR code to scan in Okta Verify.

I’m not seeing any text about having to use Okta Verify on the same device – if we’ve got that anywhere, could you help me find it so I can escalate it as a bug?

All Integrator Free Plan accounts are on Okta Identity Engine. If you need an Okta Classic platform for staging purposes, you can contact the Okta representative who manages your account to explore your options. And for now, you can optionally use Okta Verify on your PC for your integrator account for a sneak peak at what using Okta will be like after your production account’s OIE migration!

I’m trying to migrate an oktapreview.com dev org, but I’m realizing that the integrator free plan only allows 10 users. What paid/unpaid options do I have to preserve/replicate my current configuration in this dev org? Furthermore, what options might I have if my company already pays a license for a separate account (.com) and this oktapreview.com is used for dev and dev-testing purposes?

I’ve started setting up my new Integrator Free Plan organization to transfer my public OIN integration but I’m unable to create a support ticket since I am not a paid costumer explained in this forum post Unable to Raise a support case using super admin developer account. Following the blog post how do I “contact Developer Support to request that your integration be migrated to your new organization”?

@markfigr Thanks for the heads up! I’ll follow up with the relevant teams to find the intended process for making this contact and update the blog accordingly.

@markfigr

I’ll DM you the address that we’re using to let integrators open support cases while help center access in integrator accounts is being worked out.

We’re not sharing that address publicly since it’s a temporary measure that circumvents the correct process, but if any other readers need it, post here and I’ll message it to you if the help center access thing hasn’t been worked out yet!

@micalazalea Please contact your company’s Okta account representative to discuss your options for moving your dev org to a preview account. They’ll be able to assess whether you qualify to use the internal processes that can do a direct conversion of a developer account in a preview cell to a preview account, or a developer account in a prod cell to a prod account. If you need to move from a prod cell to a preview account or vice versa, a migration will still be necessary.

Hi, I tried to register for an Okta Integrator Free Plan account. It always fails with an error: “Something unexpected happened while processing your registration. Please try again.” I tried a few times, but no luck. Always the same failure. Please help.

@dzhang Welcome to the forums! First, please search your email for “okta” to see if an acceptance email on an earlier attempt to sign up might have ended up in spam. Then, make sure you’re using your work email address (non-gmail) and try again with plus addressing – for instance yourname+okta@company.tld. Our most frequent source of sign-up issues is when there’s already an account with your email because an earlier sign-up attempt succeeded and the “check your email” message was missed

@edunham Thank you for your help! I eventually worked it out using “myname+okta@company.com”.

Hi @edunham, could you please DM me the address for opening a support case too? Thanks!
